Droid X

Well, I just got my Droid X and I’ve spent the past two days putting it through its paces. I must admit, it’s faster than I was expecting, much much faster. The Swype keyboard input is phenomenal. Honestly, I still don’t really like the multitouch keyboard, but having Swype almost completely eliminates the need for individually inputting letters. Obvious exceptions are words that it doesn’t natively know and passwords. Actually, I must admit that outside of lacking WPA-Enterprise support for Purdue’s Wifi, the annoying pain that is inputting secure passwords is my biggest gripe with the touchscreen keyboard.

App fragmentation is not as bad as I was expecting. Most applications seem to work fairly well and I don’t feel that every app had its own signature feel, unlike on my old Blackberry, where every app tried (and failed) to create an app that didn’t make me wasn’t to pike my eyes out. Even some of the less desirable applications actually look beyond presentable even though you can tell the developers spent little to no time on them. I truly believe that using Swype is the difference between me being pleased and enthused with this phone. Our of all of the people I’ve down the phone to, the keyboard seems to get the most appreciation.

The camera is somewhat lacking and a lot of tweaking is needed to get the phone to a usable state. For instance, while I understand some people kill for 7 homescreens, I personally don’t see the point. I limit mine to three and honestly don’t find myself using the third one too terribly much.

The mason complaint I have with the Android operating system is what most people would consider minor, but it is absolutely driving me insane: you cannot organize the default app drawer! This seems completely pointless to me as I lived by this feature on my Blackberry. PLEASE give me the ability to add folders to the app drawer. I want to be able to separate my apps based upon their usage!

The app store, as is commented upon often by reviewers, had no great way to promote good apps. I understand it will ingersoll be filed with crap, but please promote, in a responsible way, the good apps.

Anyhow, more information and opinions on this device may be forthcoming if I get bored again…
